For the Seminar & Composition course I am currently taken, I was asked to used Atavist, an online platform to emulate a genre of writing. Out of the plethora of genres including criticism, satire, poetry, etc., I chose to emulate journalism. For some time now, I have steadily become fascinated in several artists because of their effort to use their status and fortune to help those in need, and change our world for the better. For this assignment, I chose to focus on black performers and artists in the entertainment industry. I did this specifically because people of color are not always recognized for their altruistic actions. This article shines a spotlight on two artists, Chance the Rapper and Rihanna. They are both known for their amazing musical talents, but are not always recognized for their humanitarian work which includes stopping gun violence in a tumultuous neighborhood, or funding education for those in need. Not only did I focus on these two people but I also discuss several movies including Burning Sands and Pariah, that cover deep topics that are stigmatized in the black community such as homosexuality. As a black student, I thought it was important to recognize these artists for their philanthropic work as well as analyze and recognize these movies for shedding light on sore subjects in the black community.
