For this project, I transformed a Dr. Seuss classic,The Cat in the Hat,into a creepy, fictional story. I utilized the Audacity app, an audio recorder and editor, to put together this project. All of the sounds in my project, except for the music, I created by layering different sound effects. I recorded anything I could find in order to have a broad spectrum of sounds to work with. I recorded the sound of footsteps, a door slamming, a running faucet, and more. My focus was to create an eerie atmosphere, so I set the story during a terrible rainstorm. I layered different sounds to emulate the sound of rain. To do this, I layered the sound of people running, a helicopter flying by, and the sound of a shower. I also had to find a way to record myself telling the story in a way that would be beneficial for the atmosphere I was trying to create. Rather than telling the story in an up-beat fashion, I focused on trying to change the tone of the book by slowing down my pace and getting quieter whenever the Cat in the Hat spoke. Dramatic pauses and creepy music also helped to create a disturbing mood. Overall, working on this project was exciting, and it was interesting to see how everyday sounds can be utilized to transform the meaning of a story.
