Postpartum depression is an epidemic that plagues many young women but is often overlooked or discounted. Women are expected to be good mothers and completely infatuated with their newborns. Therefore, when women do not experience feelings of love towards their newborns, and instead experience anger and hatred, they feel as if they have nowhere to receive support. This problem is exacerbated among the Asian community where women and families do not view mental health as a legitimate problem due to cultural pressures and traditions. I am creating a podcast which brings together the voices of Asian women who experienced postpartum depression along with the difficulties associated with not being able to find support or treatment and why. I am also incorporating the voice of medical professionals who deal directly with these women.
The podcast I am creating will both be informational as well as (I hope) relatable in order to open the door to conversation regarding PPD among the Asian community. Listening to the stories of others and being able to relate, I believe, will also encourage other women to realize that what they are experiencing is not unique or wrong. Furthermore, by combining this with a professional perspective while also explaining why there has been a lack of information and help among the community, I hope, will allow for a persuasive yet, compelling podcast. Along with this podcast, I will also include a research proposal to pursue topics on PPD among Asian communities. Especially due to the lack of literature and research surrounding this topic, I believe that this podcast is a good starting point to garner attention and open doors.
